Depression associated with a Chronic Physical Illness or Injury
People who live with a chronic illness pain or injury have a greater risk of developing depression. One in five people will have depression at some point in their lives. Research shows 43% of Australians with mental disorders have a chronic illness. This develops due to major changes that can result from the effects of injury or illness causing major disruptions to a person’s life. These can include not being able to work which creates financial hardship, disruption to social activities that deprive one of pleasurable distractions and feelings of helplessness and isolation.
I can relate to this, having sustained a work related injury that resulted in Acute then Chronic pain. When your life is turned upside down and you are dealing with endless Doctors visits, Case Managers, Back to work programs and Insurance Company’s anxiety and depression seem to go hand in hand. The future prospects and outlook can appear very bleak. When I researched pain management I found that anxiety and depression increase ones perception of pain ten fold. With a lot of both Psychological and physical support I was able to find away to make those changes that supported me to return to a new life that was both beneficial and rewarding. I chose to grow and develop in ways that enabled me to feel fulfilled and learnt a lot about myself in this process. I learnt to create new neural pathways that assisted in relieving pain and used self-hypnotic techniques to feel in control of my life and to alleviate fears and beliefs about my situation. If you can relate to experiencing similar feelings we can definitely work on a plan to support you to regain control of your life and move toward creating a brighter future.
